Travel south along the shores of Lake Wakatipu below The Remarkables mountain range, where you'll indulge in views across to the Eyre Mountains which are nothing short of being truly spectacular.

Passing Kingston at the foot of the lake, the journey continues on into southern rural heartland.

After a refreshment stop in Te Anau the tour embarks on what is one of New Zealand's most stunning scenic drives along the Milford Highway, passing through the Eglington Valley and into the Fiordland National Park.

Numerous stops are made for photos and short nature walks. We'll encounter native wildlife, stunning natural rainforest, and glacier-carved Alpine vistas. Your experienced driver guides will share the secrets of their beautiful backyard through informative commentary and anecdotal storytelling.

Arriving in Milford Sound, you'll depart on an amazing scenic cruise aboard a modern catamaran with spacious viewing decks; perfect for soaking up those epic sights. The catamaran will take you along the full length of the fiord, all the way to the Tasman Sea and back, stopping off at Stirling Falls for a glacial shower and a refreshing finale!

Take in the natural wonders of the fiord. Encounter majestic waterfalls and rare wildlife. Milford Sound is home to a vast array of interesting wildlife and birdlife including penguins, seals and dolphins, which often put on a show playing in the bow wave of the boat.

This tour's jovial and friendly crew will be on hand throughout the cruise serving complimentary tea and coffee and helping take those all important photos.

Your pickup location will be confirmed by The Supplier who will make various pickups at bus stops throughout Queenstown – this may not be your selected location (see FAQs for further pick up information).

It’s a long journey from Queenstown to the Milford Sound but the landscapes from the coach are breathtaking and along with the continuous commentaries from the driver, you will immerse on the surroundings. The Milford Sound cruise itself is of course the best part of the tour but it lasts just 1:45h. The coach does several stops during the journey, some of them with time to take pictures and videos and others just toilet breaks. Do not expect much about the lunch on the cruise so you better bring some snacks with you.

If you’re worried about the long drive, don’t be—the glass-roof coach makes it an experience in itself. The cruise was stunning, with the sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls. Booking here for the tour was simple, and the day felt like a perfectly curated nature escape.

Honestly, this was one of the most beautiful tours I've ever done! The drive to Milford Sound is unreal – the scenery is just jaw-dropping. Once you’re on the cruise, it’s all about chilling out, soaking in those waterfalls, and sipping some tea. Booked it last minute, but it was so worth it!

I’m still blown away by how stunning this tour was. The coach ride was so scenic, and I loved being able to look up through the glass roof at the mountains as we drove through the valleys. The cruise on Milford Sound was even better than I imagined, with towering cliffs and endless waterfalls. I booked it through Backpacker Deals, and it couldn’t have been easier to plan. If you love nature and want an adventure, this is a must while you’re in New Zealand!

Milford Sound is approximately a 5 hour drive from Queenstown and 2 hour 30 minute drive from Te Anau.

Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in New Zealand with over 180 rain days a year. A jacket and warm clothing are recommended, as the weather can be unpredictable all year round. You’ll definitely need a rain jacket (and a change of clothes!) if you decide to take advantage of Milford’s free shower service underneath Stirling Falls waterfall.

Milford Sound is stunning in any weather! The more it rains, the more waterfalls you will see. The crew all agree that Milford is more spectacular in the rain as the surrounding mountains come alive with countless waterfalls that you don’t see on a sunny day.

The vessel is wheel chair accessible from the wharf into the main passenger cabin and has accessible toilet facilities on this deck. The remainder of the boat is not accessible by wheelchair.

  • A rain jacket – Even on a sunny day the waterfalls will get you wet.
