Your journey begins at the Milford Sound terminal, where a short boat ride takes you to Sandfly Point, the starting point of your guided walk. 

Enjoy a 5.5 km (11 km return) walk alongside the cascading Arthur River and moody Lake Ada, on a well-maintained track. From the ancient canopy trees towering above to the emerald-green ferns below and the birdsong that echoes through the trees, it is a unique World Heritage Area best explored by foot. Our destination is the impressive Giant Gate  This spectacular waterfall is best viewed from the large swing bridge spanning the river. 

We then return, taking the time to enjoy this incredible forest.  The small group of 12 walkers to 1 Trips & Tramps guide provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the fascinating human heritage of the track. On completion of the walk, an opportunity is made for photos at the sign marking the end of the track.

Walkers then re-join the boat for the transfer back to Milford. Watch for seals and dolphins, which frequently accompany the cruise, making for unforgettable wildlife encounters.

 

  • Client cancellations 7 days or less from travel for guided walk departures, packages and private tours/charters will receive a 100% charge for the booked excursion.
  • Cancellations for Milford Sound Coach Cruise and Walk and Track Transport departures 3 days or less from departure will receive a 100% charge for the booked excursion.
  • If the booking is cancelled prior to 7 days for guided walk departures, packages and private tours/charters, or 3 days for the Milford Sound, Cruise and Walk, you will receive a full refund for guided walks
  • Date transfers may be made within the cancellation period, subject to availability. Please note this may not be possible in busy periods.

  • Fiordland is an alpine area and is subject to extreme weather. On rare occasions, adverse weather, road or track conditions may require us to make alternations to or cancel trips
  • You must follow the instructions of the guide and parents please ensure your minors do the same

  • The guide reserves the right to curtail your trip at any time if they believe your safety or the safety of others may be compromised.

Jeans and streetwear are not suitable clothing, please ensure you wear suitable outdoor, activewear for the walks. We also recommend you have a change of clothes and dry shoes in case it is a wet day. Rain jackets are available if requested prior to the day of travel.

Good fitness is required, the walking pace is set around 3 km per hour. There is a 50 metre vertical gain and the walk is up to 11 km total (to the waterfall return), walking time is around 3.5 hours. There are some areas where terrain is rocky or rough underfoot.
