Franz Josef Glacier was stunning in every way. The ice formations were out of this world, and the guides made it all feel accessible. Booking the trip didn’t take much effort, and it’s something I’ll treasure forever.
Relish the opportunity to hike the ever-changing Franz Josef Glacier, the fastest commercially guided glacier in the world, on this epic day out in the Southern Alps.
Beginning with pick-ups from selected Queenstown accommodation, you'll board a fixed-wing flight from Queenstown to Franz Josef Village. You'll fly over the Southern Alps, home to over 3,000 small glaciers, to Franz Josef Glacier on the western face of Aoraki/ Mt Cook.
The weather in this mountainous region can be very changeable, with rain frequent on the western side. Should the weather not be suitable to visit Franz Josef, you might have the option of Tasman Glacier instead – both experiences are very similar.
On arrival at Franz Josef, your guide will accompany you to your check-in with the helicopter and guiding partners, who will provide you with all the necessary equipment and a safety briefing.
Then, with your professional glacier guide, you will fly high via scenic helicopter flight over the jaw-dropping landscape – an opportunity to take in the full panoramic majesty of Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere/Franz Josef Glacier. Finally, you will land high up on the main ice fall of the glacier, where your guide will help you make the final preparations for your adventure.
Here, you'll be fitted with crampons for the 2 hours on the glacier ice. Because Franz Josef Glacier is the fastest commercially guided glacier in the world, its features are constantly changing, so you'll have a good chance of seeing the glacier calving around you. You might find yourself sliding through narrow crevasses, navigating between staggering ice towers, or squeezing through ice caves.
At the end of your glacier experience, the adventure continues with a fixed-wing aircraft flight back to Queenstown. If the weather and conditions permit, your pilot will take an alternate route back, passing by Tititea/Mount Aspiring.

I’ve done a lot of hikes, but this heli hike stands out as something really special. I booked it online without any trouble, and the guides were fantastic. The helicopter ride gave us incredible views, and the glacier hike itself was such a unique experience. The ice formations and caves were stunning, and the guide’s knowledge added so much depth to the day.
What an epic way to spend a day! The helicopter ride to Franz Josef Glacier offered the most breathtaking views of the mountains and forests below. Hiking on the glacier itself was unreal—the ice caves and formations are straight out of a movie. Booking with Backpacker Deals was quick and stress-free, and I’m so glad I did it. If you’re visiting New Zealand, this is one of those experiences you’ll rave about for years.
The heli hike itself was perfect. Our guides were the best! The combination of the stunning views, thrilling helicopter ride and the hike made for an incredible day that I will never forget.
This tour is an absolute must-do! Went with my girlfriend, and we had the most amazing time ever. Highly recommend!!
It was like something out of a movie! We flew from Queenstown to the glacier, explored ice caves, and even saw glacier calving. The return flight with the chance to pass by Mount Aspiring was the cherry on top. I'd give it a 10/10!!
Hiking on Franz Josef was an incredible experience, and our guides were amazing. It was equal parts thrilling and educational, and I couldn't get enough. Would definitely come back and bring my family!
What an epic adventure in Franz Josef! The heli-hiking tour was mind-blowing - flying over the glacier and then hiking on the icy terrain was absolutely surreal. The experienced guides made the trip even better with their fascinating insights about the glacier's formation and local wildlife. Unforgettable experience
